Surfing the giant sand dunes at Te Paki is a great buzz. Some of these monsters reach 2000m so be prepared for the ride of your life, hurtling down at exhilarating speed.
Parasailing
For exceptional views and intoxicating thrills, try parasailing. With 1200ft of tow line you’ll glide smoothly through the air, the islands, beaches and dazzling waters laid out below you.
Puketi Kauri Cycling and mountain biking
20km of disused rail line has been converted into a cycle track offering great views of the Northland countryside. All you have to do is show up and pedal – use a tour operator to do the rest.
There are also plenty of mountain biking opportunities. Try the Pirau Ridge track through the magnificent Puketi Kauri Forest.
Take the opportunity of exploring the beautiful countryside on horseback. Enjoy stunning ocean views from the top of a volcano and for those who are up for the challenge, experience the buzz of a canter by the sea.
Scenic flight
Get a birds eye view of the 144 enchanting islands and turquoise waters that form the Bay of Islands. Fly to Cape Reinga or land in a helicopter on the Hole in the Rock where you’ll be hosted by a Maori guide and learn about the local history. You’ll be buzzing for the rest of the day.
Skydiving
For a mind blowing view, consider being thrown out of a plane at 16,000 feet. You’ll reach speeds of up to 200km per hour in free fall before safely landing.
4WD, quad bike tours and blo karts
Decide on your vehicle of choice and take a hair raising tour across the extensive sands at Ninety Mile beach.
